IbsenBackstage

IbsenBackstage is a relational database that provides metadata and resources for the repertory of plays that were staged during Henrik Ibsen’s time working as a theater practitioner.

Ibsen was employed at The Norwegian Theater in Bergen as its dramatic author from 6 November 1851 until 9 July 1857; during his time there he became increasingly involved in stage production, working in tandem with the theater’s director, Herman Laading.

Ibsen took up a new position as artistic director at Kristiania Norwegian Theater in Christiania on 3 September 1857 and remained in this position until 1 June 1962, when the theater declared bankruptcy. Finally, he joined the staff of Christiania Theater on 1 January 1863 as a part-time aesthetic consultant, a position he held until 1 April 1864 when he left Norway for Italy.

During these years Ibsen was to varying degrees involved with the staging of more than three hundred individual plays by dramatists from across Europe.
